Chapter 8

The hidden entrance led them to a carved out tunnel. The rocks were damp, and moss grew all around. Thick cobwebs blocked their path.

“This is so disgusting. Why do I have to put up with this?” Charlotte fussed. She was swatting at the cobwebs getting tangled in her hair and on her clothes.

“You’re the one that wanted to come down here. No use complaining now, young lady,” Rebecca mused. She was enjoying it a little to watch Charlotte fuss about the cobwebs.

“I didn’t think it would be this bad. Haven’t they ever heard of a maid before?” Charlotte huffed.

“Charlotte, even a maid couldn’t clean this place,” her father said from behind. He was picking off pieces of web from his shoulder.

“Dad’s right, Charlotte,” Nathan said, tugging on Charlotte’s dress.

“I know but still, a little light cleaning. Is that too much to ask for?”

“Just put up with it for now dear,” Nathanael said.

“Fine. But, you’re buying me a whole new outfit when we get back,” Charlotte said.

“If that’s all it takes, I’ll definitely do that, dear,” Nathanael responded with a shrug, shaking his head.

Callus was having a hard time holding in his laugh while watching the four of them bicker. Even during a strenuous time like this, a family’s still a family, huh? he thought as he watched them.

The tunnel led them straight for a few yards before a spiral stone staircase appeared. Callus led the group down to the bottom. Another straightaway led them to a large steel door, which had been left slightly opened. Callus tried to pull it open but with no luck. The hinges were rusted. Nathanael and Callus both struggled to pry it open.

“Everyone, grab the door and help us out,” Callus said through clenched teeth.

Charlotte, Rebecca, and Nathan grabbed the door and helped pull. The door finally gave and slid gradually away. After a couple more minutes, the entrance was wide enough for everyone to slip through.

They found themselves in a research room. A large metal table sat in the center, covered in documents and charts. There were vials with strange liquids inside. Beside the table were stacked diagnostic medical machines. A shelf along the wall held various jars with organs from different animals. On the left wall were diagrams of animals; anatomy charts. On the right wall were animal cages.

“What is this place?” Charlotte asked.

“Looks like someone was conducting research down here,” Callus said as he examined the left wall.

“What kind of research would someone need to conduct in a secret lab on an isolated island?” Rebecca asked. She was looking at some papers on the table.

“The kind you don’t want anyone to know about,” Nathanael answered.

“Take a look at this,” Callus called out.

Everyone went over to where he was shining his light. Rebecca and Nathanael shined their lights along with his, revealing diagrams of three different animals and their characteristics.

“Is that a kangaroo?” Nathan asked.

“Yeah. This one is of a honey badger.” Callus shined the light on the picture on the left. “And this one is of a cottontail,” he shined the light on the picture in the center.
